Fantasy Dynasty 101:pt. 2

January 8, 2008 by Lee

This is the second segment in a series on how to set up a fantasy football Dynasty league. It will cover using both the traditional Defense/Special Teams and as well as using Individual Defensive Players.

In Part One we covered getting your owners, determining cost/payout, and where to host your league. Thanks to the readers for your input! Let’s get rolling now with Part Two.

STEP FOUR: APPOINT A COMMISH

The Commissioner can be whoever sets the league up or determined by owners however they choose. This can come earlier in the process, as there are likely decisions to be ruled on already in the previous steps. The Commish needs to have the time to attend to the weekly tasks as well as making decisions for the league. Appointing a Co-Commissioner can help things run more smoothly, someone helping with tasks as well as someone to bounce decisions off of. Establishing a good “Set in stone” rulebook will make life easier in the decision making process, more on that later. Here is an example of some of the duties taken from our IDP/Dynasty league…

1.7 The league office will consist of one League
Commissioner and one Assistant
Commissioner

1.8 The league commissioners are responsible for
conducting league business, arbitrating league
disputes, recording all draft information, collecting
weekly line-ups, compiling the weekly Free Agent
pick-up list, and providing weekly reports to
franchise owners.

1.9 An assistant commissioner will be appointed by the
league commissioner and will be responsible for
communicating league concerns and business to the
commissioners and intervening in transactions that
involve the league commissioners. If the commissioners
are out of contact for any length of time, the
assistant commissioner will attend any matters
requiring timely action. The commissioner may request
assistance in the roles in 1.8.

STEP FIVE: COMMUNICATION

This may seem like a trivial step but it is important. A valid email address should be required of owners, whether it’s a local league or a league put together online. The Commish should have an email set up for league affairs, then save all of the owners to the address book.

Another great tool for communication is a league forum. This is where rules can be discussed, news posted, polls, and so on. If you have a forum that you frequent they may be willing to set you up with one. If you don’t have that access you can look at setting one up or I could even give you a  forum  at Football Jabber.

STEP SIX: RULEBOOK

Right here is the bread and butter. How much you put into this is going to determine how smooth your league runs. The first year there will always be things you forgot about. Getting all those things out of the way that you already know about though is huge!

As you can see in the Commish step above, we have our rules sectioned out and then each point numbered. League Overview is section 1 and then the points follow. Looks all legal like, don’t it? A majority of what we cover from here on out will be things found in the rulebook. Some may be a given, some may be determined by league polls in your forum. To put some kind of order on this, I will go in the order of our rulebook. Of course these things will have a lot of customization that your league will put on it.

Until next time, start getting those owners together!
