Conference Title Games and Beyond

The Stage is set. Patriots and Giants. Get ready for several references to David and Goliath over the next two weeks. All kinds of “team of destiny” quotes. Peyton Manning interviews where he is asked why his brother got there earlier than he did. Tiki Barber fibbing and saying how happy he is for the Giants (lies…you know that guy hoped they would crash without him). Oh yeah, the Patriots might make some history. Is Eli going to beat up the bully who has been pushing his brother around for years?

The thing the Super Bowl does have going for it is that the Giants, with nothing to play for, were the last team to seriously threaten the Patriots in week 17. Eli was hot with Four TD’s and 251 yards. Sure…he had an INT but that is what Eli does. He has been hot since then. I do realize that this praise could just be talking myself into believing that the Super Bowl will be a good game. I have nothing else to do the next two weeks.

For both title games it comes down to capitalizing on what is given too you. The Chargers hopefully have learned the lesson that you have to score TD’s when playing at the highest level in the NFL. It didn’t help matters that L.T. was sitting on the bench watching, apparently he had taken himself out of the game with his bad knee. They could have one that game but not on Nate Kaeding’s foot alone.

“LT tried to go, and he just couldn’t go,” Turner said. At one point, it was reported that he had “soreness” in his knee and “could return,” and a sideline report called the former MVP’s being on the sideline a coach’s decision. But after the game, Turner defended Tomlinson by saying: “The guy was not able to go. The doctors and trainers said he couldn’t go.”

Have we seen the last of Brett Favre? Will he go out on the sour note of one bad throw in O.T. ending the Packers run? He is supposed to announce his intentions soon.

“It’s been a great year. I’m very disappointed,” Favre said not long after the Packers’ loss. “But had we gone to the Super Bowl and lost, I’d have been disappointed, too. Had we been fortunate enough to win it, the decision is still there. There’s several ways to look at it. But I’m not going to rush to make any decisions, but it will probably be much quicker than it has in the past, which people probably will appreciate that.

“I’m just going to try to enjoy this season we had as much as we can and try to block this game out, which will be very hard. I’m not going to let this game sway my decision one way or the other. And the Packers have to make decisions, too. We haven’t discussed that.”

The Packers also failed to jump on what was given to them. A couple of missed field goals and then getting the ball first in O.T. The chances were bound to end sometime and they ended in the Giants first drive of O.T. If you want to call it a drive, field position was pretty much gift wrapped with Favre’s pass.

  1. The Chargers, man. I am somewhat surprised that at least one member of the defense did not simply tie Norv Turner up and set him aside somewhere where no one would notice him until the game was over. What the heck kind of play calling was that? Exactly the kind we’ve come to expect from him; the other games - the ones he called well - were the exceptions that prove the rule. I know some people who hate the Chargers and they can’t even find it fun with Turner at the helm. Like shooting fish in a barrel.
