New York Giants Championship History

January 28, 2008 by Lee

With the Giants and the Patriots meeting in the Super Bowl this weekend I thought I would take a look back at the championship history for the New York Giants.

In the Pre-Super Bowl NFL the Giants racked up four titles. The Giants won their first championship in 1927, it’s third year in the league. There was not a Championship game in itself but the Giants 11-1-1 record was fit for them to be named NFL Champions. In NFL Championship games prior to the Super Bowl era, they put together a 3-11 record. Those three wins were:

  • 1934: New York Giants 30/ Chicago Bears 13
  • 1938: New York Giants 23/ Green Bay Packers 17
  • 1956: New York Giants 47/ Chicago Bears 7

1986 Season

When the Super Bowl era began the New York Football Giants found themselves in quite a dry spell. It wasn’t until the 1986 season that they returned all the way to the big game. In Bill Parcells fourth season with the team the Giants posted a 14-2 record. They knocked off the 49′ers 49-3 and the Redskins 17-0 in the NFC playoffs. After 30 years the Football Giants were back in the title game…

Super Bowl XXI Giants 39- Broncos 20

Phil Simms set Super Bowl records for most consecutive completions (10) and highest completion percentage (88 percent on 22 completions in 25 attempts). He also passed for 268 yards and three touchdowns and was named the game’s most valuable player.

1990 Season

Four years passed before Bill Parcells would once again have the Giants in the Super Bowl. In 1990 they were 13-3 in the regular season. During the NFC playoffs the Giants passed up the Chicago Bears 31-3 and then the San Francisco 49′ers 15-13 in a close NFC Championship game. The Giants star QB from Super Bowl XXI, Phil Simms sits the big game out. Jeff Hostetler gets the nod.

Super Bowl XXV Giants 20- Bills 19

New York, employing its ball-control offense, had possession for 40 minutes, 33 seconds, a Super Bowl record. The Bills, who scored 95 points in their previous two playoff games leading to Super Bowl XXV, had the ball for less than eight minutes in the second half and just 19:27 for the game.

2000 Season

Fast forward ten years. There is no more Bill Parcells as he moved on after the last Super win. Jim Fassel is the man who led the Giants to their best record since the last Super Bowl run, 12-4. The Giants defeat division foes, the Eagles in the playoffs 20-10. In the NFC title game they shut out the 5th best scoring team in the NFL in the Vikings 41-0. They were not enough to take out the Baltimore Ravens defense, who up to the big game had allowed a total of 16 points in the playoffs.

Super Bowl XXXV Ravens 34- Giants 7

The Giants gained just 1 first down on their final four possessions. Jamal Lewis’s 3-yard touchdown run midway through the fourth quarter game Baltimore a 31-7 lead, and Robert Bailey recovered Dixon’s fumble on the ensuing kickoff return to set up Stover’s 34-yard field goal with 5:27 remaining to finish the scoring.
