NFL Jabber

May 19, 2008 by Lee

This has been out for a few days but we can take a look at it anyway.  ESPN has put out their Power Rankings already for the NFL.  It really looks a lot like it would have at the end of last season, except for the Packers falling down to #10.  No, the Giants are not #1 and they were far from that at the end of the regular season.  You can’t take away how hot they were but you have to admit they were not one of the top teams…they played the best though.  The Falcons steal the #32 spot from the Dolphins…

Have a look at the Power Rankings HERE.

Aaron Rodgers has the job in Green Bay…finally.   He only has a couple years left on his rookie deal so he could be looking to get paid soon.  No Pressure.  Vote in the side bar how long you think Rodgers will hold the job.

The Chiefs are going to go easy on Larry Johnson.  Wasn’t there a time he was called “Pampers” or something like that?  I know, it has to do with his foot, just struck my memory.

The Jaguars are pumped about Jerry Porter.

“There’s no question in my mind that Garrard-to-Porter is going to be a combination that will be very productive for us,” coach Jack Del Rio told the Florida Times-Union after the session.

Have you ever thought to yourself that Jon Gruden reminds you of Bobby Knight? Yeah, me either but there is a history and influence there. Jon was a ball boy for the Hoosiers back in the 75-76 season.

“I mean, he’s Bobby Knight, man,” said Gruden, whose father, Jim, was an IU football assistant coach. “I’m observing all of this, seeing the players giving him incredible respect, the organization, the tempo of practice, the effort, the demands, the whole sense of what he wanted accomplished.

“Did he influence me? You bet he did. I learned you’ve got to demand 100 percent from everybody - the secretaries, the trainers, the players, everybody. If you do that, you’ve got a chance to get it done. This guy is one of the all-time icons, one of the greatest coaches ever in any sport.”

If you like looking at the history of the NFL you can’t miss this. Pro Football Reference has a series on the History of the NFL Structure and Formats.

Part One
Part Two

Did you know that during WWII the Steelers and Eagles merged to form the Steagles?  The above mentioned Pro Football Reference taught me that some time ago.  There is a pretty cool video covering that time in history for the Steelers over there—> in the side bar or on our Video page.
