Mike Martz is Sweet on his RB’s
July 9, 2008 by Lee
There has been quite a bit of anticipation of the Mike Martz offense arriving in San Francisco. So much that you actually hear his name mentioned more than Coach Nolan. Niners fans are excited to see what can happen with the talent they have on the offensive side of the ball. You know, that Alex Smith kid who was drafted pretty high…or Vernon Davis, who is supposed to be so damn talented. We know about Frank Gore. Martz appears excited about him…
“Frank Gore is an elite player and one of the very best in the league,” offered Martz, who has compared him to a former player he coached in Marshall Faulk. “Anytime you can take somebody like Frank and put him out on the perimeter, or get him one-on-one with someone that is what you want. You want to put Frank in an environment where he can get the ball away from the pack because his open field running is pretty special.”
DeShaun Foster was added in the offseason as a bit of a change of pace and insurance policy for Gore. Other than the fact they will be facing the toughest run defense schedule, there shouldn’t be many excuses they can use when it comes to the run game in San Fran.
“I think it’s going to be a very strong position,” summarized Martz. “Any time you can have two accomplished running backs like Frank Gore and DeShaun Foster, you’ve got something pretty good to work with.”
