Fantasy Football Tip of the Day #2

June 4, 2008 by Lee · Leave a Comment

Last year around this time I shared a tip with a fellow that is in a few of my leagues.  Let’s call him Fantasy Football Joe.  Joe was looking for a way to save time while finding news on the players that were on his team.  An RSS reader was not an option for Joe because he had convinced himself  that he was too old for that new tech-like stuff.  So then it dawned on me that I already used a site that would be perfect for Joe…one of my biggest rivals.

Top Fantasy Football Dynasty QB Discussion

May 8, 2008 by Lee · Leave a Comment

This is the prime time of year for Fantasy Football Dynasty Leagues to be opening up. We had taken a look at three of the Top Three Dynasty Prospects at QB according to various Fantasy site rankings. Now, it’s time to take a look at the results of the Jabberhead Poll to see what you thought of them…

  • Tom Brady (37%, 50 Votes)
  • Peyton Manning (31%, 42 Votes)
  • Tony Romo (19%, 26 Votes)
  • Other (13%, 17 Votes)

Total Voters:135

Over the course of this Poll the lead changed between Tom Brady and Peyton Manning several times. Brady broke away over the stretch.

Considering the Poll was for the Top Fantasy QB for 2008, I’m curious about the 17 votes for Other. I understand that views can vary but I’m interested to hear who thinks that another QB will top out both Tom Brady and Peyton Manning. Is it Carson Palmer? Big Ben? Drew Brees? Drop some comments in the box below, we want to hear what you have to say!

As we go into our Fantasy Football coverage TJ Ford, our own Dudley Do-Right from up north, has started putting out the Dynasty rankings. You can check out Quarterback HERE.

Keeping this topic interactive with the readers, we invite you to do some rankings here as well. Click and drag how you would rank the following QB’s for a Fantasy Football Dynasty. Keep it in consideration that you want them over the course of a few years. With a majority of leagues starting 12 QB’s we will list 15 for those that vary. If you think someone else should be in the Top 15, please leave it in a comments below. You can then view the consensus rankings as well.

Fantasy Football Draft Winner| Jason Campbell

May 1, 2008 by Lee · 3 Comments

The Wide Receiver group was overshadowed by the Running Back this year in the NFL Draft. So much in fact that the first WR was not picked until the top of the second round when the Rams took Donnie Avery. With the ball catchers falling there was a team lurking in the second round that made out like bandits.

The Washington Redskins ran away with two of the Top Ranked WR’s on most “experts” boards. They were able to grab Devin Thomas the pick after the Rams took Avery. Jumping at opportunity, they also took Malcolm Kelly later in the round. Although Kelly’s stock had fallen in the weeks leading up to the draft this made for quite the young duo to suit up for the Skins.

Most WR’s don’t really have an impact until the second year right? So what does this have to do with fantasy football in 2008? The Redskins have just set up their QB, Jason Campbell, to climb on Dynasty and Keeper draft boards. Factor in the fact that new Head Coach Jim Zorn will like to use A LOT of 3-4 WR sets and you should see these young WR’s getting some reps in their first year. Currently both are listed behind Santana Moss on the depth chart at the “Z” position. Let’s be honest. Randel El would look much nicer in the slot once they go 3 plus WR’s. This will open the door for at least one of these guys, possibly both in 4 WR sets.

It may not be in 2008 but the staff have given him the weapons to raise his fantasy stock. So now would be the time to buy on Jason Campbell in Keeper/Dynasty leagues.

Want a little more? Sandwiched in between the two WR’s was the pick of USC Tight End, Fred Davis. We know Chris Cooley is the guy at Tight End. Adding Davis opens up the playbook for Zorn in turn giving Campbell more options. If Cooley continues to line up as an H-Back (Fullback) at times, could Davis lineup at TE? What about some 2 TE sets Jim? Besides all that formation fun there is the importance of depth behind Cooley.

So all of you Dynasty and Keeper guys that were hoping that Vince Young might get some help in this years draft…may be the time to hit up the Jason Campbell owner for a trade!

Top 10 WR Prospects | Football Jabber

April 25, 2008 by Tjford · Leave a Comment

This year’s class of wide receivers is a good mix of speed and size guys but lacks a standout top 10 guy. With many high profile offensive teams needing a top WR, this year’s class should prove to have good opportunity to make an immediate impact. A deep class, many teams may choose to wait until the third round to get their guys.

1) Limas Sweed, Texas

There was worry that Sweed would run a 4.5+ 40 at the combine and that teams may choose to ignore him until the second round. Well Sweed ran a 4.46 and had a solid combine, cementing his first round status. I think Sweed is the safest pick in the class with sure hands and crisp route running. He is a physical receiver who can fight off jams at the LOS. The only knock on Sweed is injury history.

2) Devin Thomas, Michigan State

Thomas may have earned the distinction of being the first WR selected in the draft with his monster combine. He ran a 4.32 40 at 215 pounds. A physical sure-handed pass-catcher, Thomas will receive some criticism for not producing at all until this past year but I believe that can be attributed to scheme and coaching as much as the player.

3) DeSean Jackson, California

The top speedster in the draft, he won’t get a lucky top 10 reach this year like the receiver many compare him to did last year, Ted Ginn Jr. Elite kick return abilities paired with 4.3 40 speed and sure hands, Jackson has Steve Smith-like upside but will need to adapt to playing at a much more physical NFL level.

4) James Hardy, Indiana

I really want to rank Hardy at #1 on this list. I really do but I always have difficulty ranking guys who have character concerns around effort. Look at guys like Dwayne Jarrett. Ranked highly and set up to succeed as the WR2 for Carolina but now he might be lucky to crack WR4 on that team. Hardy, at 6′5″, has the size to win jump balls all day in the red zone and has surprisingly good hands for a big man who doesn’t necessarily run the cleanest routes. Easily the biggest upside in the draft, Hardy could develop into the next TO.

5) Early Doucet, LSU

Many have Early Doucet as a proto-typical slot receiver; I couldn’t agree more. Doucet worked out and produced well at the Senior Bowl but neglected to perform at the combine and worked out poorly at LSU’s pro day, running a slow 4.56 40. Doucet has big game experience and the hands to produce in the NFL.

6) Malcolm Kelly, Oklahoma

Kelly has seen the biggest freefall in his draft stock outside of the now second day pick Adarius Bowman. Concerns about his knee, inability to tough out a thigh injury and finally a horrible 4.68 40 on the OU pro day have lead to Kelly falling from surefire WR1 to round 2 pick. Measureables and injuries aside, the kid has talent. We’ve all seen the circus catches that Kelly has made. I hope that the thigh injury bothering him had hampered his ability to run. If he can get/stay healthy, he might be a steal for a team in the second round.

7) Jordy Nelson, Kansas State

I like Nelson as a physical possession receiver for a team starving for WR help. He is the type of player who can fight for catches over the middle with his 6′2″ 217 lb frame and still have enough speed to beat his man occasionally with his 4.49 40 speed. He has shown the ability to beat elite corners in college and has the size to position out defenders in the NFL.

8 ) Donnie Avery, Houston

Donnie Avery sort of back up his claim to being a top level speedster. His 4.34 pro day time isn’t the 4.2 he predicted, nor was his 4.40 at the combine. However, 4.3 speed is still legitimate speed. Avery’s numbers are thought to be inflated because of the pass happy Houston offense but you cannot deny his ability to catch the ball. He also brings return abilities to the table. I like him to go in the late second or early third.

9) Eddie Royal, Virginia Tech

While a 4.39 40 time may not turn too many heads when you are 5′9″ 184 lbs, Royal won over scouts at the combine by performing well in the route running and catch drills. He was fluid and looked very comfortable in performing. Don’t be surprised if he sneaks into the first day.

10) Mario Manningham, Michigan

Manningham has done all he could to ruin his draft stock; running a 4.59 40 when speed is your calling card, lying directly to NFL GMs and scouts and terrible interviews to name a few. Mario is back on the rise after running a 4.42 on his pro day. He needs to works on his hands as the last time I recall watching some game tape on Manningham, he suffered through multiple drops. His injury history is also well documented. Still, when Manningham is on his game, he is a force on the field. Mario’s draft position may have much to do with what Gms are willing to gamble.

Close to the cut:
Andre Caldwell, Florida
Earl Bennett, Vanderbilt
Will Franklin, Missouri
Dexter Jackson, Appalachian State
Paul Hubbard, Wisconsin
Harry Douglas, Louisville
Marcus Monk, Arkansas

Who’s the Top Fantasy Dynasty QB in 2008?

March 21, 2008 by Lee · 9 Comments

Believe it or not this is a great time of year for some fantasy football owners. Those that play in Dynasty and Keeper leagues are considering making moves for the 2008 season. This is a time of year that many new Dynasty leagues begin to pop up as they do not have to wait since most of them run year round. It’s common practice to be drafting vet’s while then waiting for the rookies to be placed on teams before a rookie draft. Today we are going to look at who the top Dynasty QB’s are. In recent years there has been no question to this. After a QB highlighted season though the answer is not as clear.

Browsing various fantasy football sites that have their early Dynasty and Keeper rankings up there are three names that are at the top of the list. Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, and Tony Romo. Tony is going to hinder our averages since he has only been news for two years and only played in 10 games in 2006 but let’s have a look at the per game averages anyway. We will look at those things that you get scored on in most leagues at the QB position.

Please hit the poll over there—-> in the sidebar as who you think the top Dynasty QB is!

TD’s Per Game 06/07

Tom Brady: 2.31
Tony Romo: 2.12
Peyton Manning: 1.94

Interestingly enough, Tom Brady’s inflated season in 2007 did not provide a lot of separation. You can bet that there is a direct correlation between Randy Moss being in a New England Patriots jersey. The previous three seasons he averaged 26 TD’s per season, which he almost doubled with Moss in town last year. Good news for Brady and his owners is that he will have Moss again this season.

Not far behind Brady is Tony Romo. Yes you can say, “Well he has Terrell Owens…” Owens has caught 28 of Romo’s 55 TD’s over the last two seasons. Myself there is reason to believe that if Moss and Owens were taken out of the equation that Romo would be putting up more TD’s. the Cowboys seem interested with getting a solid #2 WR to pair with Owens which could turn scary.

Strange to find Peyton at the bottom of this list. This is due to taking only two years because of Romo’s short stint as a starting QB. We all know Manning is a consistent TD’s machine. What sets him apart from the others is that Manning’s success is not hinged on a particular WR. Even without Marvin Harrison in 2007, Manning was able to match his 31 TD’s from 2006. We all remember that he is not far removed from a 49 TD season as well.

Yards Per Game 06/07

Tony Romo: 273.62
Peyton Manning: 264.66
Tom Brady: 260.47

Romo gets to be top dog in one of these categories. In 2007 his Yards per game jumped from 181.4 in 2006 to 263.2. Kinda makes you wonder what we will see in 2008, huh?

As he is with TD’s, Peyton Manning is a consistent yards machine. He has only been under 4000 yards once since his rookie season and has NEVER been under 3700 yards.

Another inflated stat courtesy of Randy Moss. 2007 was the second season in Brady’s career over 4000 yards and he damned near hit 5000.

INT’s Per Game 06/07
Tom Brady: 0.63
Peyton Manning: 0.72
Tony Romo: 1.23

Tom Brady’s career low 8 INT’s in 2007 is one of these stats that we can’t attribute to Moss. This was all Brady. It was his second highest career total for a season in attempts as well. Brady seems to be in a zone.

Peyton had his highest INT total since 2002 last year. Still, if your league takes away 2 points per INT he still only had 28 points taken from you over the course of the season.

Although Romo’s INT’s went up from 2006 to 2007 we have to keep in mind he played six more games and had 183 more pass attempts. His % or INT’s per attempt actually went down. Still, he is the guy out of the three that appears to have the best chance to get some points taken away if your league punishes your QB for picks.

So what have we learned here today? It appears that there is not that big of a difference between these QB’s in your Dynasty draft regardless of scoring system, at least over the past two seasons. We can look for Romo to continue to improve. We can look for Brady to have another season with Randy Moss assisted stats. We can also look for Peyton Manning to provide consistent numbers despite who he is throwing to. Don’t feel like you have to be the first one to jump at a QB in your Dynasty or Keeper draft this year.

When to trade LaDainian Tomlinson? A Dynasty Dilemma

March 19, 2008 by TD Hill · 3 Comments

The ultimate quandary for dynasty league football owners is figuring out when it’s the right time to move that special player that consistently made you perennial playoff favorites. For many LT2 owners that time, unfortunately, is now.

After seven straight seasons of dominance his presence alone on your squad made up for any questionable roster move you may have made. Despite a few weak links in your starting lineup, you still were able to strike fear in your opponents heart as they waited all Sunday to watch him single handily beat their team. Despite not matching his career plateaus set the previous season, Tomlinson was still able to churn out nearly 2,000 total yards and almost 20 touchdowns at age 28. Supremely impressive especially when considering this was his lowest output in three seasons. Anyone would kill to have a running back with such constant production on which to lean his squad on. But in the year when the heir apparent was born, Adrian “The Purple Jesus” Peterson, many began questioning Tomlinson’s stranglehold as the most valued running back in fantasy. Now begins the delicate balance of knowing when to start entertaining trade offers while his value is still high or riding Ladainian for the next few years for that one last shot at glory.

If there’s one thing we know about star running backs it’s that their demise comes swiftly and harshly. Shaun Alexander and Priest Holmes are the recent examples. However, the best example to compare LaDainian Tomlinson to is a running back that dominated the fantasy world almost as much as LT2: Marshall Faulk. After his, at the time, record setting season of 26 TD’s, Faulk enjoyed a memorable campaign the year after notching over 2,000 total yards and 21 touchdowns (numbers eerily similar to Tomlinson last season). Of course we all know Faulk’s injury history and fall from the fantasy throne after that. It would be extremely presumptions to claim that Tomlinson will face a similar fate in 2008 as Faulk did in 2002 and beyond, but the writing is on the wall that this ride is ending its run.

So with the future now, Ladainian Tomlinson owners should be working the phones and looking for a package that should include a younger running back upon which to build and some other pieces that can continue to make your dynasty team formidable in the future. By doing so you may very well be jeopardizing your chances to win that championship this season, but as always is the case in Dynasty, it’s better to make yourself slightly weaker now so that you can dominate later. If you trade wisely and obtain a few players that can still make you a contender and build your team for the future, by all means don’t hesitate to pull the trigger. It’s been fun being the envy of the league for so long as a Tomlinson owner, but it’s time to move on.
